‘Thank God it’s Flyday’

Steeler unveils FD55 S-design with unique split-level, two-deck flybridge yacht

The FD55 "Flyday"

Steeler Yachts in the Netherlands has revealed a striking new addition to its award-winning S-design Performance line. The FD55, project name “Flyday”, is a genuinely unique concept that combines the dynamic lines of a pure powerboat with a full-beam flybridge and a huge lower deck living area in a split-level arrangement. This 16.80-metre 2.5-deck speed machine is less than three metres high yet offers an unrivalled 45 square metres of interior volume.

Having recently won the European Powerboat of the Year award for its custom-built long-range cruiser Li-Janne, the premium Dutch motoryacht maestros at Steeler have come up with another groundbreaking idea. The all-aluminium FD55 “Flyday” has rightly been granted a patent for the way it blends a full-beam flybridge with a super-spacious single-deck interior within a sleek sportsboat design.

It also benefits from another patented Steeler innovation – the yard’s S-design hull with its steep flare bow offers a top speed of 40 knots, low fuel consumption, minimum spray and maximum interior volume. With an impressive range of 450 NM at cruising speed, owners may well become used to saying ‘thanks God its Flyday’ as they get away for the weekend… Or longer.

Smart thinking

Hans Webbink, founder and CEO of Steeler Yachts, is a tireless trendsetter who never stops thinking of new ways for clients to experience motoryachting. The original inspiration for the “Flyday” is a typical example of how fresh ideas come to light at Steeler, based on the specific needs of clients and Webbink’s personal experiences.

“In summer 2017 we accepted a flybridge boat from another brand in part exchange for a new Steeler,” he recalls. “As Steeler did not offer a flybridge model at the time, I took her out for a spin in the Med to get a feel for this type of cruising. The sense of freedom and space provided by a full-beam flybridge impressed me, but I was less enamoured with being so high up.

“Why do flybridge yachts always have to have three decks I thought, especially now glass can be used as part of the lower deck structure? Together with our design team, we therefore designed a new flybridge concept which combined the traditional main deck and lower deck into a single floor. If there’s ever been a boat design where the word compromise has been eliminated, the Flyday may well be the one.”

Day and night

In some respects the Flyday can be seen as the ultimate day boat, with superior al fresco options in three distinctive areas: the foredeck, the aft deck and, just four steps up, the full-beam flybridge. However, with the type of expansive interior which is normally reserved for a much larger yacht, the Flyday is also ideal for extended trips onboard.

Open the sliding glass doors aft and there are just four steps down to a large seating area with two sofas. Giant slabs of high-strength, top-quality glass to port and starboard bathe the interior in natural light, especially in the panorama lounge. Every Steeler motoryacht is open to full customisation and the yard has already drawn up three possible interior layouts with overnight accommodation for between two and six people.

The ‘Owner’s’ version features a large living/lounge area with a bar/galley plus a master suite forward with full standing height, a separate WC/shower and a day head. A ‘family’ design also includes a double guest cabin with WC, while the ‘family & friends’ option has a kitchenette instead of a full-blown galley to create space for a third guest cabin.

Comfort and style

Over the past decade Steeler Yachts has developed a formidable reputation for its ability to deliver an exceptionally high quality of construction, engineering and finish. The Dutch yard is also renowned for its many innovations designed to simply make life more pleasant onboard. Examples of how this philosophy pans out on in practice on the FD55 “ Flyday” include the phenomenal degree of insulation, the hydraulic bimini system which extends out to a full canopy or closes the entire flybridge area for bad weather cruises. Add to that the fact that the yacht is so incredibly easy to moor as she come standard with twin Volvo Penta IPS800 propulsion. .

And then there is the power… All too many fast yachts have the Ferrari looks but – literally and metaphorically – fail to come up to speed in practice. The Steeler FD55 Flyday does not disappoint, blending the dynamic lines of an elegant sports boat with an impressive performance of 40 knots and excellent stability at all speeds.

This being a Steeler yacht, clients can also customise their Flyday in as many different ways as the imagination allows. The yard has already thought ahead by offering options such as Volvo Dynamic positioning, reverse-cycle air conditioning, and an alternative for a bimini in the form of a T-top aluminium frame that folds hydraulically over the front windscreen.

Launch FD55 S-design

The FD55 S-design is in the final phase of development and Steeler Yachts will start construction on the launch model in May. Adventurous yachtsmen who would like to be involved in this exciting new project are welcome to contact the yard and share their vision on ways to enhance this latest addition to the Steeler Performance Yachts line.
